T-Mobile Announces Date for 2G GSM Network Shutdown

If you still rely on T-Mobile’s 2G GSM service, it’s time to upgrade your device. The company is shutting down its legacy network this August. This comes several years after its rivals shut down their own 2G networks.

T-Mobile is retiring its 2G GSM network this August

In its Network Evolution support page, T-Mobile announced that it will shut down its 2G GSM network on August 3, 2026. The company has already informed its customers who still depend on the legacy network and has given them enough time to switch to modern technologies.

AT&T shut down its 2G network in 2017, while Verizon did so around 2020. However, T-Mobile kept the aging network alive for some good reasons. “T-Mobile retained GSM longer than other carriers to give customers and partners additional time to migrate legacy devices,” said the spokesperson to Fierce Network. “Other carriers shut down their GSM networks earlier, and T-Mobile helped fill that gap by maintaining support while customers transitioned to newer technologies.”

Furthermore, the 2G network also supported some international travelers. A number of visitors to the United States used phones that supported LTE data but did not have Voice over LTE (VoLTE) enabled. Those devices depended on circuit-switched (CS) to make phone calls.

By retiring the 2G network, T-Mobile will likely be able to reuse its wireless spectrum for modern technologies. For most customers, the shutdown is unlikely to affect them. The modern smartphones already support LTE, VoLTE, and 5G. However, if you are still using a 2G-only device, you should upgrade before the US carrier switches off the legacy network.
