Samsung could be planning its biggest selfie camera upgrade in years for the Galaxy S27 lineup. Reports suggest the company will replace the long-serving 12MP unit with a new 16MP sensor. But the real story may not be the extra megapixels, but a new feature that makes the front camera far more flexible. The upcoming flagships could get a feature similar to Apple’s Center Stage mode introduced with the iPhone 17 series.

Galaxy S27 could get a smarter selfie camera, not just a sharper one

According to a recent leak, Samsung is testing a new 16MP selfie camera for the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra. While it’s unclear whether the Galaxy S27 and S27+ would get the same upgrade, a recent report hints at a new feature to accompany the upgraded sensor. It was actually in our wishlist for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, and the 2027 model may finally bring it.

Center Stage, as Apple calls it, allows users to switch between a standard selfie view and a wider, landscape-oriented framing without physically rotating the phone. Using a higher-resolution image sensor and software processing, the camera can crop and reframe the image while maintaining good quality. The result is a more flexible front camera that works well in several scenarios:

  • Group selfies without having to stretch your arm farther
  • Wider framing for video calls and virtual meetings
  • Landscape selfies while holding the phone in portrait orientation
  • More natural framing for front-facing video recording

Rather than being just another camera gimmick, it’s a feature that improves everyday usability. With a new 16MP sensor seemingly confirmed for the Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra, a Center Stage-like feature would dramatically improve the versatility of the selfie camera. A higher-resolution sensor gives Samsung more room to intelligently crop the image while preserving detail.

Of course, none of this has been officially confirmed. The leaked 16MP selfie sensor is promising, but whether Samsung pairs it with an iPhone-style framing feature remains to be seen. More details about the Galaxy S27 series should emerge in the coming months, following the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 launch.
