Samsung is looking back at its seven years of Galaxy foldable innovation. The company has highlighted the progress it has made since introducing the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. This builds hype for the next-gen foldables, which could include Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8.
Samsung’s foldable legacy prepares for its next evolution
In a post, Samsung shared its brief journey with foldable smartphones. The company said the first Galaxy Fold created a new category of mobile devices with a foldable display. It later expanded the lineup with the Galaxy Z Flip (released in 2020), that feature a pocketable clamshell form factor.
Samsung pointed out some key improvements in the subsequent generation of foldables. The company introduced Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), replacing the initial polymer screen with a premium feel. It also brought IPX8 water resistance, making foldable phones more durable for day-to-day use. Thanks to the zero-gap Flex Hinge, the devices have transformed into slimmer, more elegant, and more ergonomic than ever before.
Samsung said its foldable evolution is far from complete. Now, a new chapter of Galaxy foldables is coming this summer. “We will continue to deliver next level innovation in foldable technology and form factor – as we have done consistently for the last seven years,” said the company.
While Samsung has yet to reveal its foldable strategy for this year, leaks suggest it could introduce two book-style foldable phones. The Korean firm may launch a shorter and wider model, tentatively dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold 8. The regular model could be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, succeeding the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with a similar design language.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 may succeed the Galaxy Z Flip 7 as Samsung’s compact foldable option. All three next-gen foldables could go official at an event in London on July 22, 2026.
