Galaxy Z Fold 8 series and Z Flip 8 support Emergency Satellite SOS

The Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 support Emergency Satellite SOS. This gives users a way to contact emergency services when cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. However, this depends on the carrier and region.

Samsung has been expanding satellite communication support across select Galaxy smartphones through partnerships with carriers in North America, Europe, and Japan. The company says satellite connectivity can support emergency assistance and essential communication. This is important when traditional mobile networks are unavailable.

In the U.S., Verizon already lists eSOS and satellite text support for Galaxy flagship models following the Galaxy S25 series. Meanwhile, Samsung says T-Mobile, Verizon, and other carriers are part of its broader satellite connectivity rollout. That means the new foldable series can offer Emergency Satellite SOS where supported. However, the experience may depend on your carrier, market, software version, and local regulations.

Be aware, it’s only for emergencies and extreme cases

Emergency Satellite SOS does not turn the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, or Flip 8 into a satellite phone. You cannot use it to make normal satellite voice calls when you lose signal. Instead, the feature is designed to help users reach emergency services when they are outside cellular coverage. Verizon’s support page explains that Satellite SOS appears when a compatible Android phone detects an emergency call attempt without network coverage.

So, if you are hiking, driving through a remote area, or stuck somewhere with no mobile signal, Emergency Satellite SOS can help you contact emergency help. But it is not made for calling friends, family, or regular contacts over satellite.

Do not confuse it with regular Emergency SOS

Samsung phones already include a regular Emergency SOS feature. This can call emergency services or alert your emergency contacts when you press the Side button five times.

Samsung explains that this feature can send alerts, location details, photos, and audio recordings to emergency contacts, but it still depends on normal phone connectivity for many actions. Emergency Satellite SOS is different because it works through satellite connectivity when regular mobile networks are unavailable.

The availability of the Emergency Satellite SOS feature depends on your carrier too

Even though the new foldables support Emergency Satellite SOS, not every user will get the same experience on day one. Samsung says satellite communication features roll out in phases. They can vary by model, network, market, OS version, and One UI version.

That means users in the U.S. may see support through carriers like Verizon or T-Mobile, while other regions may depend on local carrier partnerships. In Europe and Japan, Samsung is also working with operators to expand satellite communication support.

Still, users should know what they are getting. This feature is for emergency satellite assistance, not full satellite voice calling. It gives you an extra safety option when you have no cellular or Wi-Fi connection. However, availability depends heavily on carrier support and location.

For foldable users who travel often, go hiking, or spend time in remote areas, Emergency Satellite SOS could become one of those features you hope you never need, but will be very glad to have if something goes wrong.
