The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Is the Best iPhone and iPad Replacement Yet

Preorders for the Z Fold 8 close on August 7, and if you’re an iPhone user who also carries an iPad, this is the one Samsung release I’d actually tell you to pay attention to. Not because the specs beat everything else on paper. Because of what it lets you stop carrying.

I’ve been using the Z Fold8 for 5 days at this point. Here’s the argument for it in one sentence: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the first phone I’d genuinely call a two-device replacement.

It opens into a tablet you’ll actually read on

Unfold the Galaxy Z Fold 8, rotate it, and you get a 4:3 display roughly the size of an iPad Mini.

That aspect ratio matters more than people expect. 4:3 is the shape of a book page, and it’s the shape almost every reading app was designed around. Long articles, eBooks, PDFs, a Reddit thread you’ve been scrolling for twenty minutes. On a normal phone you’re reading through a mail slot. On the Galaxy Fold 8 you’re reading a page.

Multitasking gets the same benefit. Two real apps side by side, at usable sizes, without the compromise of a 6-inch screen pretending to be two 3-inch ones.

Video works in both orientations, which your iPad doesn’t do

This is the part I think gets underrated. Your iPad is great for landscape video and awkward for vertical. Your iPhone is the reverse. The Fold 8 handles both, because you’ve got a tall outer screen for TikTok and Reels and a wide inner screen for YouTube and Netflix, in the same device. Honestly, the inner screen is also quite well optimized for short-form content as well. Samsung did a great job with the optimization on both displays.

Nobody wants to admit how much vertical video they watch. But we all do, and one of your two Apple devices is bad at it.

But won’t I be stuck outside the Apple ecosystem?

This used to be the real objection, and honestly it was a fair one for a long time. It’s gotten much weaker, mostly because Google and Samsung pushed and Apple moved.

Samsung now supports Quick Share to AirDrop, so sending a file to someone on an iPhone isn’t the dead end it was.

The bigger change is RCS, and it matters now that Apple supports it on their side too. Texting an iPhone user gets you typing indicators, read receipts, full-resolution photos and video, delivery over data instead of carrier SMS, and end-to-end encryption in both directions.

Worth being precise here, because people get this wrong. You don’t get iMessage, and the bubbles stay green. What you get is a group chat that doesn’t fall apart, media that doesn’t arrive looking like it was faxed, and messages that are encrypted. For most people that was the entire objection.

Home screen layouts, default apps, notification behavior, the entire look of the thing. If you’ve ever wanted your phone to work the way you think rather than the way a design team decided, that’s the swap you’re making. Some people genuinely prefer the guardrails, and that’s fine. But if you’ve been quietly annoyed at iOS for years, this is the release where I’d stop being patient about it.

Two devices become one, and it fits in your pocket

I usually carry either my Galaxy Tab S11 or an 11-inch iPad Pro in my bag. After spending the past week with the Z Fold 8, I’ve found myself leaving both behind far more often. Its nearly 4:3 inner display is perfect for reading, browsing, and getting work done, covering so much of what I’d normally reach for a tablet to do.

That’s the biggest shift for me: I’m no longer carrying both a phone and a tablet. My bag is lighter, I can leave an extra charger and cable at home, and the difference in weight is more significant than it sounds. Both of those tablets weigh well over 400 grams. The Z Fold 8, by comparison, weighs just 201 grams. When you’re carrying it every day, cutting that weight by more than half makes a surprisingly big difference.

What about Apple’s own foldable?

It’s rumored for the fall, and I’d expect the first one to be good. Apple usually shows up late and polished.

But Samsung shipped the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. That’s seven years of hinge revisions, crease reduction, screen durability work, and software that actually knows what to do when a display changes shape mid-task. First-generation hardware from anyone is first-generation hardware. We watched Samsung learn those lessons in public, and they were not always pretty.

I’m not saying wait for Apple is wrong. I’m saying the version of this form factor that’s had seven years of fixing is available right now and it’s fantastic.

So should you do it?

If you read a lot, watch a lot, and you’re tired of carrying two things, yes. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the closest thing to a genuine iPhone plus iPad replacement I’ve used.
