Samsung’s Wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 May Not get Spotlight at Unpacked 2026

Samsung may be planning an unexpected shake-up for its 2026 foldables, especially the Fold models. Alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 8, the company could launch a Fold 8 and a Fold 8 Ultra. Current reports suggest the standard Fold 8 may actually be the long-rumored wider variant, with the Ultra succeeding last year’s Fold 7. However, despite the fresh design direction, Samsung seemingly doesn’t expect to sell many units.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) may come in limited quantity

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) alongside the Fold 8 Ultra and Flip 8 in late July. However, according to recent supply chain and production reports, the company plans to keep the spotlight firmly on the latter two. The Korean firm considers them its primary “hero” devices for this year’s foldable launch, meaning they will receive the biggest marketing push globally.

This follows an earlier report claiming Samsung plans to produce only around one million units of the Fold 8 (Wide) this year. That is less than half of the company’s estimated Fold sales from 2025. That cautious approach is understandable for what is essentially a first-generation redesign, but the rumored wider Fold arguably has one of the strongest use cases Samsung has introduced in years.

Unlike current Fold models, the wider Fold offers a more practical tablet-like experience in a compact form factor. Its 7.6-inch 4:3 inner display could make multitasking, document editing, reading, and split-screen apps significantly more comfortable, effectively turning the device into a truly pocketable productivity tablet.

That said, Samsung’s cautious approach also makes sense when you look into rumored specs, especially the cameras. The Wide Fold appears to prioritize productivity and battery life over camera performance, as it lacks a zoom lens. Many would likely stick to the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Ultra) for its superior camera setup. Moreover, its cover screen already offers a full-scale smartphone experience without unfolding the device.

The lower volume suggests Samsung may be treating the Fold 8 Wide as a market experiment rather than a mainstream replacement for the standard Fold lineup. The company likely wants to measure real-world consumer response before fully committing to a wider Fold design in future generations. Expect more leaks in the coming weeks.
