For the past few weeks, rumors have been swirling that Samsung might use BOE OLED panels in its upcoming Galaxy S27. A fresh report now suggests the company has decided against this plan due to negative sentiment within its business units. The Korean firm’s in-house display arm will be the sole supplier of OLED panels for the next-gen S-series flagship.

Samsung will stick with its in-house OLED supplier for the Galaxy S27

BOE launched an OLED panel development project for Galaxy S27 after receiving a Request for Information (RFI) from Samsung. The company hoped to step into the supply chain for the premium Galaxy S lineup, which sells around 30 million units annually. However, the project has suffered a setback.

According to a report from ETNews, BOE has “halted development of the Galaxy S27 OLED” after failing to secure a supply deal with Samsung. This came after President TM Roh’s recent visit to China. While the reason for the cancellation remains unclear, industry watchers believe the decision was due to resistance within Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display.

Samsung Display has long been the sole OLED supplier for the Galaxy S series. The firm also supplies premium display panels to other major smartphone makers, including Apple. It is difficult for Samsung Display to accept that its parent company will use OLED panels from its Chinese rival.

It is worth mentioning that BOE supplies panels for some budget and mid-range Samsung phones. However, the company has not yet succeeded in entering the flagship Galaxy phone supply chain. In 2021, it also attempted to supply OLED panels for the Galaxy S21. However, concerns about quality and costs stopped the deal from going through.

Samsung’s MX business unit reportedly wanted to save $5 per OLED panel by sourcing displays from BOE for the base Galaxy S27 model. However, that plan has now reportedly been dropped. It will be interesting to see whether the upcoming Galaxy S26 FE uses BOE panels, as rumors have also hinted at that possibility.
