Samsung’s Foldable Sales Drop 9% in 2024, Flip 6 Struggles

by | Feb 3, 2025 | Galaxy Z, News

While Samsung thwarted the competition to substantially increase its flagship sales last year — the Galaxy S24 series registered a 19% sales growth over the S23 — it couldn’t replicate the success in the foldable market. Its Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 saw a 9% decline in shipments in 2024. The Flip model, in particular, sold far fewer units than Samsung would have liked. Perhaps that’s why it plans to launch a more affordable Flip FE this year.

Samsung suffered a 9% drop in foldable sales in 2024

Korean financial services firm Hana Securities recently revealed Samsung’s flagship smartphone sales data for 2024, including foldables (via X/@Jukanlosreve). According to the report, the cumulative six-month global sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 last year (from the July 10 launch to the end of 2024) were 5.21 million units. The Fold accounted for 2.32 million units and the Flip accounted for 2.89 million units.

In comparison, the total sales figure for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 over the same period in 2023 (launched on July 26) was 5.76 million units. This 9% drop in Samsung’s foldable sales in 2024 was primarily due to a weak demand for the Flip model. In 2023, the Korean firm sold only 2.09 million Fold 5 phones but 3.66 million Flip 5 units.

As you can see, Fold sales increased last year but Flip sales declined sharply. This might be a reflection of the target audience for the two form factors. The Flip is more of a style statement, so tech enthusiasts and power users are less likely to buy it. Moreover, Flip users likely upgrade their devices less often. The Fold, on the other hand, is a powerhouse with big screens, quality cameras, and more. Its users would want to upgrade to the latest model more often.

It’s worth noting that Samsung also launched a special edition slim Fold last year, in October. However, it is only sold in South Korea and China. These sales figures do not count the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition. If counted, Samsung might have matched its 2023 foldable sales last year.

There’s a new Flip in the pipeline

To make its Flip line more accessible, Samsung plans to launch a new model this year. The rumored Galaxy Z Flip FE is expected to be more affordable than the regular Flip 7. Both devices should debut in July or August alongside the Fold 7 and a new tri-fold. Expect leaks to reveal more about these upcoming Samsung foldables soon.
