Galaxy Z TriFold’s Display Earns Industry’s Most Prestigious Honor

Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold may have been hard to find, but it has redefined the smartphone industry with its dual-folding display. The company has announced that the panel has been named “Display of the Year” by the Society for Information Display (SID). It is the most prestigious honor within the Display Industry Awards.

Samsung will receive the award at Display Week 2026, opening on May 3 in Los Angeles. The recognition shows the importance of foldable technology in the mobile space. Unlike traditional foldable phones that bend at a single hinge, the TriFold display lets the device fold at two points. This allows it to expand into a tablet-like screen while still offering a compact form factor.

According to SID, the TriFold panel stands out for its ability to deliver both powerful performance and exceptional portability. When fully opened, it offers an immersive display in the 10-inch class, making it suitable for productivity, creativity, and entertainment. Thanks to the panel’s advanced materials, it offers a durable dual-folding structure in a slim profile.

Samsung Display says that the panel has a total module thickness of just 0.44 mm. This is the thinnest among its foldable lineup. In internal testing, the panel withstood up to 500,000 folds at room temperature without degradation. 

However, the Korean display maker went through key technical challenges, including the slip phenomenon. The layers inside the display can shift during repeated folding. This issue is more common in tri-fold designs because they have two folding axes. As a result, the company developed new adhesive materials and improved stress distribution across the panel.

So far, Samsung Display has won the “Display of the Year” award eight times. This year’s win is its third in the foldable display segment (after those of 2020 and 2022). “This recognition reaffirms Samsung Display’s leadership in the foldable market,” said Hojung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Display Product Planning Team at Samsung Display.
