Samsung’s Galaxy S27 series is still months away, but leaks are already painting a clearer picture of what the company has planned. A new report suggests Samsung is preparing significant changes behind the scenes for the lineup’s displays. A separate leak, meanwhile, indicates the rumored Galaxy S27 Pro may not receive the flagship camera hardware many had expected.
Samsung may overhaul the Galaxy S27 display supply chain
According to a report from Korean publication ZDNet, Samsung is reviewing its display component strategy for the Galaxy S27 family. The biggest change involves the Display Driver IC (DDI), a chip responsible for driving OLED pixels by controlling the display’s thin-film transistors. Although invisible to users, it is a critical component of every OLED smartphone.
Currently, Samsung’s System LSI division supplies these chips for Galaxy S flagships. That exclusivity may end with the Galaxy S27 lineup. The company is reportedly evaluating third-party suppliers such as DB Global Chip, Anapass, Wonik DTI, and Novatek for the base S27 and the S27+. Diversifying the supply chain may give Samsung greater leverage to negotiate lower component prices.
Samsung also explored using BOE OLED panels for the Galaxy S27 series. However, those plans now appear to have been shelved. The reason remains unclear; it could be related to display quality, production capacity, or commercial terms.
Earlier rumors claimed BOE had offered its OLED panels at roughly $5 less per unit than Samsung Display. It’s possible Samsung Display responded with more competitive pricing, giving Samsung little reason to switch suppliers. Until more details emerge, though, the exact reason behind the reported decision remains speculative.
Galaxy S27 Pro may not get a true Ultra camera
Another recent leak offers new insight into Samsung’s camera strategy. According to a well-known tipster, the Galaxy S27 Pro may end up with a camera system that sits somewhere between the base Galaxy S27 and the Ultra rather than closely matching the latter. The Pro will borrow some camera technologies from the Ultra model, but it may not deliver a top-tier camera performance.
Exactly which camera components will be shared remains unclear, and the source notes that Samsung’s long-term strategy beyond the Galaxy S27 generation has yet to be finalized. The company could drop the Plus and go back to a three-pronged flagship lineup. There are also rumors of it reviving the ultra-slim Edge model in the future.
As always, these details are based on early supply chain information and pre-release leaks. Samsung will announce the Galaxy S27 series early next year. There is still plenty of time for its plans to evolve before launch.
