The countdown is on for Samsung’s next budget 5G smartphone, the Galaxy A17. Thanks to a handful of leaks, we already have a pretty good idea of what’s coming. A new leak says the company may ship the device with One UI 8 out of the box, though we aren’t very optimistic about it.

Galaxy A17 may not bring a One UI 8 surprise

Retailers haven’t stopped since one of them listed the upcoming phone early. GSMArena notes that several retailers across Europe have already listed the Galaxy A17, which is yet to go official. There are two key points to discuss: one is that it will include a charger in the box. What remains unclear is whether this will apply globally or be limited to certain regions.

Another comes via update tracker Akhilesh Kumar, who claims that Samsung’s Galaxy A17 will launch with One UI 8. This is unprecedented so far, as most reports have suggested it would come with One UI 7. Kumar states that the current test firmware on the server refers to A176BXXU1BYGA, which he says is a One UI 8 build.

However, if you are familiar with Samsung’s firmware numbers, the fourth character from the last denotes the OS version. Here, “B” means this is the first major OS update for the phone, not the original OS build, which is typically denoted by “A”. As such, we expect the Galaxy A17 to ship with Android 15-based One UI 7 and pick up One UI 8 as its first major update.

Rest assured, this phone will be eligible for six major updates. This puts it in roughly the same boat as the Galaxy S25 series, which are eligible for seven years of updates and currently run One UI 7. Now that retailers have started listing it, we think it won’t be long before we have our answers.
