Next Galaxy Z Flip Could Have a Built-in Speaker Inside the Cover Display

by | Sep 28, 2024 | Galaxy Z, News

It appears that Samsung and LG are working on a solution that might allow you to take calls more privately on the future Galaxy Z Flip phones. According to the Korean publication Sisa Journal, the companies are working on OLED displays that emit sound by vibrating the screen panel. Thanks to this tech, the next Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone might allow you to take calls without unfolding the screen.

Next-gen Galaxy Z Flip could have a piezoelectric speaker technology

According to the source, Samsung Display and LG Display are working on turning the display of smartphones into a speaker. This tech could allow the brand to convert the cover display of the next-gen Galaxy Z Flip into a speaker. As of now, the current Galaxy Z Flip users can’t take calls on their devices in the folded mode without turning on the loudspeaker. This feature isn’t privacy friendly and other people can hear your private calls.

This tech will allow Samsung to put a piezoelectric speaker inside the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Flip offerings. It’s worth mentioning that piezoelectric speaker technology isn’t entirely new. Xiaomi’s first-gen Mi Mix flagship utilized this tech back in 2016. It allowed the phone to offer highly narrow bezels all around the screen by eliminating the earpiece. Notably, the Vivo Nex smartphone offered a similar solution back in 2018.

The new tech will reduce the need for a dedicated space for the ear speaker

The piezoelectric speakers could replace the ear speakers on major Samsung smartphones in the future. The report suggests that the piezoelectric speaker will be embedded into the screen in layers. It doesn’t necessarily require any additional equipment. This tech will reduce the need for a dedicated space for the ear speaker. Samsung could use this space for other components of the next-gen Galaxy Z Flip model.

Samsung and LG’s piezoelectric speaker technology is still in the early stages of development. Also, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 is just a little over two months old. So don’t expect this tech to appear on a future Galaxy Z Flip series foldable phone any time soon. That said, this speaker technology has the potential to become an important feature in foldable phones.
