The Galaxy Z Flip 8‘s cover screen could become far more useful this year. According to a new leak, Samsung is working on a software upgrade that lets users open full apps on the outer display without needing widgets or special launchers. Moreover, users may be able to seamlessly continue using the app on the main display after unfolding the phone.

Galaxy Z Flip 8 may no longer treat its cover screen like a separate display
Over the years, Samsung has gradually expanded what users can do on the outer display of its Flip phones, while also making the screen bigger. However, the external display still has several limitations. By default, it can only run select essential apps. You need to enable certain settings or install an extra app to bring more apps to the cover screen.
Even then, some apps do not support app continuity. So when you unfold your Flip, your currently active app on the cover screen vanishes. And if you fold the device, it treats the action as a deliberate shut. Instead of continuing the app on the cover screen, it closes the session. You have to unlock the device, reopen the app, and start all over again.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 may address these limitations. The One UI 9 version of Good Lock’s MultiStar module already allows Flip users to launch any supported app on the cover screen without first enabling the Launcher widget. Moreover, a leak suggests the new Flip could bring seamless two-way app continuity like the Fold lineup.
In other words, Samsung may finally treat the Flip’s cover screen as an extension of the main display rather than a secondary interface designed primarily for widgets and quick actions. The change could dramatically improve the usability of the Galaxy Z Flip 8’s outer display.
LockStar also now supports unlock animations on the Flip cover screen, so Samsung is preparing the entire ecosystem to elevate the user experience before unfolding the device. We shall soon find out what else the Galaxy Z Flip 8 has in store. The device launches alongside the Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra later this month.
