The foldable smartphone market is about to be shaken up. Apple is reportedly entering this space with its first foldable phone, tentatively called the iPhone Ultra, this September. The timeline falls about one month after Samsung’s next-gen foldable lineup launch, which may include the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8.
Apple may join the foldable smartphone race this September
While Apple reportedly hit setbacks in the engineering test phase for the iPhone Ultra, the company appears to be sticking to its plan to launch the device this year. According to a report from Bloomberg, the iPhone Ultra could go official on September 8 or 9.
Apple typically holds a launch event for next-gen iPhones on the first Tuesday or Wednesday in September after the US Labor Day holiday. Since Labor Day will fall on September 7 this year, the company may schedule its event shortly after. Note that the next-gen iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will also join iPhone Ultra at the event.
Meanwhile, Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch its next-gen foldables on July 22, 2026, at an event in London. The company is expected to kick off pre-orders on the launch day, with general sales likely starting on August 5. This means Apple’s entry will come about one month after Samsung’s latest foldable hit the market.
Samsung has reportedly tweaked its book-style foldable strategy this year. In addition to the regular taller and narrower Fold, the company may debut a wider and shorter model. The former could launch as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (successor to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7), while the latter could carry the Galaxy Z Fold 8 moniker.
The wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 is likely Samsung’s response to the iPhone Ultra’s expected passport-style design. We will let you know when Samsung or Apple shares the official launch date.
