Samsung’s grip on the foldable smartphone market is starting to slip, and it could face even more pressure soon. Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone later this year, and a new rumor suggests the company has already started working on a second-gen model as well. If true, Samsung could soon face its toughest competition yet in the fast-growing foldable market.

Apple is about to challenge Samsung’s dominance over the foldable smartphone market

Samsung will soon launch its eight-gen foldables, now including a wider model. The usual Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Fold 8 Ultra will be accompanied by the Fold 8 (Wide) this year. Apple, meanwhile, is gearing up to make its first foray into this segment with the iPhone Ultra. Despite being a first-gen model, the iPhone Ultra is likely to outsell Samsung’s latest offerings because of Apple’s brand pull.

If that isn’t already enough to worry Samsung, Apple may double down with a second foldable next year. The company may be arriving late to the party, but it appears ready to make up for lost time. According to renowned Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station, Apple has already approved development of the iPhone Ultra 2, with plans to launch it around September 2027.

The leaker claims the device will continue using the same display technology as the first-gen model rather than adopting a new panel. That could work in Samsung’s favor, as Samsung Display is expected to exclusively supply the foldable OLED panels for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. However, it also means more competition for Samsung Electronics in the foldable segment.

The only way Samsung can compete is to use its years of expertise to offer more powerful hardware. It could introduce more advanced foldable displays, upgraded cameras, and more refined software tailored to the big screens. It remains to be seen how the company responds to Apple’s entry into the premium foldable market.
