Samsung appears increasingly confident about the prospects of its upcoming Fold phones, especially the wider model. The company has reportedly revised its production plans for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide), increasing the number of units it intends to manufacture ahead of launch. The Galaxy Z Flip 8, on the other hand, may see a production cut.

Samsung is betting big on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide)

Samsung’s upcoming wider, passport-style foldable is expected to debut as the Galaxy Z Fold 8, while the traditional Fold design may be repositioned as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. If reports are accurate, the company believes the wider model could resonate strongly with consumers from the beginning.

According to the Korean media, Samsung originally planned an initial production run of around one million Galaxy Z Fold 8 units. As is common practice, the company would then adjust manufacturing volumes based on pre-order performance and early market demand. However, it has reportedly revised those plans and is now preparing an additional 200,000 to 300,000 units for the initial rollout.

The increase suggests Samsung expects sustained demand beyond the launch window. The company is betting big on the fresh foldable experience the Galaxy Z Fold 8 promises. It features a wider display with a more tablet-like aspect ratio, which could make multitasking, productivity apps, and media consumption more comfortable.

Interestingly, Samsung appears to see no future for the Flip lineup. There have been reports that the company is considering discontinuing its clamshell foldables, and this year’s production plans could be the first sign of that shift. The latest report indicates that Samsung will manufacture fewer Galaxy Z Flip 8 units initially than it did for previous Flip models.

The reasoning appears straightforward. Samsung’s Fold lineup has delivered stronger sales than the Flip series in recent generations, encouraging the company to prioritize its book-style foldables. As Samsung expands the Fold family with both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the Flip lineup may no longer occupy the central role it once did in the company’s foldable strategy.
