Google recently confirmed that Wear OS 6 will go official later this year. An early preview revealed the new Material 3 Expressive design language for the next iteration of its watch platform. Now we have another piece of good news for smartwatch users, including Galaxy Watch owners — the popular watch face app Facer is coming back with the upcoming update. This means you will be able to customize watch faces with several colors and designs.

In case you are unfamiliar, Facer is the leading platform for smartwatch customization that offers an extensive library of watch faces. If you are a long-time Galaxy Watch user, you probably know that Facer was previously available on Wear OS. However, policy changes with Wear OS 5 last year forced the app to leave the platform.

Facer to rejoin the Wear OS ecosystem

In a blog post, Facer wrote, “With new system-level capabilities coming in Wear OS 6, alongside innovations from Facer — the full Facer experience is set to be reintroduced — revitalized, more powerful, and better than ever”. The company has always let users customize their smartwatches with unique and expressive watch faces for years. Now, with Wear OS 6, it aims to offer the best user experience, performance, and control, as well as features that users have missed.

Google also confirmed Facer’s return to Wear OS. “We’ve partnered with well-known watch face developers – including Facer, TIMEFLIK, WatchMaker, Pujie, and Recreative – in designing this new API. We’re excited that all of these developers will be bringing their unique watch face experiences to Wear OS 6 using Watch Face Push,” an official announcement reads.

It is worth noting that Google has not withdrawn previous guidelines that are part of Wear OS 5, but it has made some changes that allow Facer and other watch face platforms to return. The company has developed a completely new API dubbed the Watch Face Push API that allows developers to create their own watch face marketplaces.

Meanwhile, Samsung is gearing up to launch its next-generation smartwatches — the Galaxy Watch 8 series — likely in the first half of July 2025. If this happens, Galaxy Watch 8 users may be the first to access the Facer watch face platform, as the device could run Wear OS 6 (One UI 8 Watch) out of the box.
