Samsung is facing a new legal challenge in the United States over alleged patent infringement in LED technology. Tau Ceti Ventures LLC has filed a lawsuit claiming that the Korean firm used its patented technologies without authorization in a number of commercial products. The case could result in financial damages for Samsung if the court rules in favor of the plaintiff.
Tau Ceti Ventures LLC accuses Samsung of infringing its LED patents
In the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tau Ceti Ventures LLC has accused Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electronics America of infringing its 10 U.S. patents. These patents are centered around opto-semiconductor technologies that improve the performance of LED and microLED devices.
The technologies make LEDs more efficient to achieve a brighter display with the same amount of power. This can help improve battery life in electronic devices. The patents also include manufacturing methods that can increase yields and reduce costs. Moreover, they aim to lower degradation and burn-in issues so displays last longer with stable performance.
“Through our technology, we can create brighter, lower-power, and longer-lasting LED and Micro LED displays,” said Tau Ceti Ventures LLC. “Especially for next-generation displays like Micro LED, patented technology is required for improved luminous efficiency and precision wiring, as they need to integrate millions of ultra-small LED chips.”
Tau Ceti Ventures LLC claims that Samsung used these technologies across smartphones, smartwatches, laptops, monitors, and more. Some devices include the Galaxy S25, Galaxy Z Flip 7, Galaxy Watch 8, Galaxy Tab A9+, and Galaxy Book 4.
The plaintiff argues that the alleged infringement was willful and intentional. It now seeks damages, additional penalties for the alleged willful infringement, and payment of legal costs. As of this writing, Samsung has not shared any word on the lawsuit publicly. We’ll let you know how the case progresses in the coming months.
