Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 has validated the accuracy of heart health monitoring in a clinical study. The smartwatch can record heart electrical activity with an accuracy equivalent to that of traditional medical equipment. The findings were presented at the recent 2026 National Cardiology Congress held in Rosario, Argentina.

Study finds Galaxy Watch 8 matches the heart’s electrical activity with clinical equipment

A team of local health professionals evaluated 225 patients using 507 electrocardiographic tracings. They compared results from the Galaxy Watch 8 with those from standard 12-lead electrocardiograms (used in hospitals to diagnose heart conditions). The results showed diagnostic equivalence in detecting normal heart rhythms in both adults and children.

Researchers found that the Galaxy Watch 8 can record atrial fibrillation, a common and potentially serious arrhythmia. The smartwatch also identified irregular palpitations and pulse abnormalities in patients who have undergone heart surgery (such as in Tetralogy of Fallot). Moreover, the device played nicely for accurate monitoring in patients with pacemakers.

Thanks to Samsung’s BioActive Sensor, the Galaxy Watch 8 can measure heart signals right from the wrist. As a result, the device collects real-time heart data without the necessity for clinic equipment. It is worth mentioning that even though researchers validated the watch’s accuracy in heart health monitoring, the company does not intend it for diagnosing or treating any medical condition.

Furthermore, the researchers created a digital tool, the ECG Calculator Watch, to calculate the heart’s electrical axis. The system took measurements from the wrist and ankle and found activity with a minimal margin of error (just 5.9 degrees). This suggests that wearable devices could support home cardiac monitoring in the future.

Apart from ECG functions, the Galaxy Watch 8 offers several useful health features such as Vascular Load, AGE Index, and Energy Score. You can purchase the watch’s Bluetooth / Wi-Fi 40mm model for $289 ($60 off) from Samsung’s US online store.
