Samsung may finally give its flagship Galaxy Ultra phone a battery upgrade. A fresh leak suggests the Galaxy S27 Ultra could feature a battery with a capacity of more than 5,500 mAh. If true, the Korean firm’s next flagship could pack a larger battery than Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Samsung may finally break the Galaxy S Ultra’s 5,000 mAh barrier
According to tipster @phonefuturist, Samsung is testing 5,600 mAh and 5,800 mAh cells from its in-house battery arm, SDI. If testing goes well, the Galaxy S27 Ultra could launch with a battery capacity exceeding 5,500 mAh. Note that the company previously planned to use a 5,200 mAh battery.
Interestingly, Samsung may achieve the massive capacity without switching to silicon-carbon (Si-C) battery technology. Several Chinese smartphone brands have already adopted Si-C batteries due to their higher energy density. However, the Korean firm appears to be putting a lot of effort into improving its traditional lithium-ion battery solution.
Anyway, the battery upgrade will be a big shift for Samsung’s Ultra lineup. The Galaxy S20 Ultra, S21 Ultra, S22 Ultra, S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, S25 Ultra, and the latest S26 Ultra all feature a 5,000 mAh battery. Of course, the company has improved battery life through efficient chips, displays, and software optimization. However, the advertised battery capacity has remained the same for several generations.
Meanwhile, leaks suggest Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a 5,425 mAh battery in the eSIM-only model. The Nano SIM version may pack a 5,235 mAh battery. If these figures hold true, Samsung’s next Ultra flagship will have an edge in battery capacity.
Samsung has traditionally packed bigger batteries than iPhone Pro Max models. However, the iPhone 17 Pro Max eSIM-only version is an exception as it features a 5,088 mAh battery. Nevertheless, battery capacity does not tell the whole story. Since iPhones and Galaxy phones run different OS and use different hardware, real-world battery life can differ greatly.
