Samsung’s Galaxy S26 launch hasn’t exactly gone smoothly, at least when it comes to its much-hyped AI features. One of the headline additions, a dedicated wake word for Perplexity, has been missing or just plain unreliable for a lot of early users. After weeks of confusion and vague explanations, we’re finally starting to get a clearer picture of what’s actually going on behind the scenes.

“Hey Plex” is out, “Hey Perplexity” is stepping in

At launch, Samsung promoted “Hey Plex” as the quick trigger for accessing Perplexity’s AI assistant. But users quickly found the option missing from settings, or not working at all even after setting it up manually. It turns out the company has been reworking the feature behind the scenes, something an app teardown recently revealed.

Android Authority reports that instead of “Hey Plex,” the integration is shifting toward a more formal “Hey Perplexity” command, so you will soon have the latter as Galaxy S26’s wake word. You can already spot traces of this in hidden elements inside the latest version of the Perplexity Android app. It suggests the new wake word is being prepped for rollout, even if it’s not live just yet. Apparently, Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas even confirmed it briefly before deleting the tweet.

This change is probably meant to avoid confusion with similarly named services, but it creates a different problem. “Perplexity” is longer and clunkier to say, especially compared to the original trigger. For something that’s supposed to be quick and effortless, that’s not a small trade-off.

To make up for that, developers seem to be adding some flexibility. There are signs the assistant will recognize multiple sound-alike variations of the wake phrase, so it won’t need perfect pronunciation every time. That helps. At the same time, it also makes the whole thing feel a bit like a workaround rather than a clean, well-planned upgrade.
