Samsung’s upcoming open-ear earbuds may have a different name than previously expected. While a Samsung app recently labeled the pair as Galaxy Able, a fresh leak now claims the company has settled on a different branding. According to the latest information, the earbuds could launch as the Galaxy Buds On.
Galaxy Buds On may be Samsung’s newest audio lineup
For so long, Samsung has been developing its first clip-on-style wireless earbuds with the “Able” branding. Everyone assumed the pair will be called the Galaxy Buds Able. Then, a recent update for Galaxy Wearable, Samsung’s companion app for various wearable devices, dropped “Buds” from the name and simply labeled it as Galaxy Able.
While a bit confusing, the name appeared in an official app, so it looked like Samsung has settled on that branding. However, a tipster now says the upcoming earbuds will be called the Galaxy Buds On. This name arguably fits better alongside the company’s existing Galaxy Buds portfolio while also highlighting the earbuds’ open-ear design.
That said, the new pair carries the model number SM-U600, which doesn’t match Samsung’s current numbering system (SM-Rxx). This suggests the company initially planned to launch them with a fresh identity, but decided against it at some point. It appears to have rebranded the device quite late in its development cycle to keep it under the Galaxy umbrella.
Despite a similar branding, the Galaxy Buds On are vastly different from any existing Galaxy Buds model. They feature a clip-on, open-ear design, so instead of sealing inside the ear canal, the earbuds attach to the outer part of the ear. This design could make them more comfortable for extended wear while allowing users to remain aware of their surroundings.
Previous leaks have also suggested Samsung will use bone conduction technology to deliver audio. Rather than directing sound through traditional speaker drivers inside the ear, bone conduction transmits vibrations through the bones around the ear, leaving the ear canal unobstructed. If accurate, the Galaxy Buds On would be nothing like current Galaxy Buds.
Of course, Samsung hasn’t confirmed any of this yet. Everything from the name and feature set could still change before launch. The Galaxy Buds On are unlikely to debut with Samsung’s new foldables and watches this month. Instead, the company may launch them alongside its next crop of products, which include the Galaxy Tab S12 and S26 FE, later this year. Stay tuned.
