It looks like Google’s AI push has hit an awkward moment, which is pretty ironic. Its own AI Overviews feature is now telling users how to avoid AI results altogether. In some cases, it even points people to other search engines. That’s like handing your rival the keys and hoping nobody notices what just happened.

As spotted by folks at Piunkaweb, DuckDuckGo on X shared that it shows up when users Google something like “no AI.” Instead of a normal list of links, Google displays a long AI-generated answer. In that response, it explains how to skip AI-heavy results. It even suggests trying other platforms, which feels like shooting itself in the foot without realizing it.

At the same time, those alternatives aren’t completely AI-free either. Some of them offer their own AI tools, but there’s a clear difference. Users can turn those features off easily. There’s no maze of settings or repeated steps. That kind of control makes a big difference when people just want quick, clean results, unlike Google, which keeps pushing AI summaries in both Discover and regular search.

Google is still the biggest player in search, so it’s not losing sleep yet. But moments like this show not everyone is on board with its direction. When your own system starts suggesting alternatives, it raises questions. If this keeps up, Google might need to rethink things before more users decide to jump ship.
