Samsung appears to be toying with the idea of a brick phone that can transform into a larger screen device. A new patent has come to light that shows a wild smartphone design combining both foldable and rollable display solutions. This is just a concept, and there is no word yet on its commercial rollout plan.
Samsung filed a patent for a brick-like foldable smartphone concept
Samsung has brought a major leap in the smartphone industry with its Galaxy Z TriFold (review), a multi-folding device. However, the Korean firm continues to explore new design philosophies for the future while obtaining patents to secure its ideas. The company recently filed another patent that reveals a mix of foldable and rollable displays in a single device.
To give a better idea, FixyFlow and xleaks7 created a concept render based on the diagrams attached to the patent file. The device looks like a thick, brick-like smartphone in its folded state, making it pocketable. It expands into a larger display, similar to a tablet, when open.

The first unfolding stage uses a similar hinge design to the Galaxy Z series. As a result, you get a bigger screen to handle multiple tasks. However, after unfolding, the phone does not stop expanding. Instead, it reaches a second unfolding stage, shifting to a rollable mechanism to further increase the screen size.
While the patent does not mention the dimensions of the device in all states, the concept makes sense for business users. The device can switch between a compact phone, a tablet-like display, and an extended workspace. However, the possibility of such a concept becoming a real product seems very low. The company may have to overcome a lot of engineering challenges.
Still, this patent shows the future direction Samsung is exploring in mobile technology. For now, all eyes are on the next-gen Galaxy foldables, which could debut on July 22 at an event in London.
