Samsung has announced new research for muscle health monitoring using the Galaxy Watch during weight loss treatment. The company will perform the study jointly with Massachusetts General Hospital’s Diabetes Research Center. If successful, the Korean firm could advance the capabilities of its wearable devices in digital healthcare.

Galaxy Watch 8 will take part in the GLP-1 muscle health study

GLP-1 medications have become popular for weight management and the treatment of chronic diseases. Nearly one in five adults in the US is said to have used this medication. As such, it’s important to consider tracking changes in muscle mass and physical activity during treatment.

As part of the Joint study, Samsung will investigate how continuous data from the Galaxy Watch can help GLP-1 patients monitor muscle loss. This research will use several biometric data sources, including body composition, activity levels, and heart rate from the Galaxy Watch and Samsung Health platform.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 will play a key role in the study. The device uses BioActive Sensor to provide predictive and preventative wellness. The research team will enroll 100 adults who are starting weight loss medication. They will split participants into two groups.

The first group will use the Galaxy Watch to track body composition via Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). They will also be able to monitor physical activity while receiving personalized exercise guidance. The second group will get standard guidance and care for GLP-1RA therapy.

Researchers will monitor progress using clinical-grade DXA scans. They will determine whether data from the Galaxy Watch and the guidance can help participants build healthier habits and preserve muscle mass. The findings might help Samsung to offer these capabilities in its future Galaxy Watches.

“This collaboration with MGH focuses on addressing real-world health challenges that patients face during GLP-1RA therapy, specifically managing muscle loss and building healthy habits,” said Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business, Samsung Electronics.
