Samsung has brought its advanced OLED technology to the all-new Ferrari Luce with a layered dashboard design. The luxury sports car features the Korean display maker’s four OLED panels. It unites digital screens with physical mechanical elements for a unique driving experience.

Samsung brings a layered OLED design to the Ferrari Luce

The Ferrari Luce features three digital display zones inside the cabin. These include a driver’s binnacle, a central control panel, and a rear passenger control panel. Samsung Display’s 12.9-inch, 12-inch, 10.1-inch, and 6.3-inch OLED panels power these areas exclusively.

The most impressive feature is the driver’s binnacle. It uses a multi-layered structure that stacks two OLED panels to create greater visual depth. The lower 12-inch panel shows the background graphics and gauge indexes, while the upper 12.9-inch panel includes three circular openings (cutouts).

These openings let drivers see the lower display beneath the top layer. The upper screen also shows the real-time torque-shift indicator, pop-ups, and tell-tales around the openings. What makes the system compelling is the use of physical mechanical hands put between the two OLED panels. This gives the driver an analogue-like sense of interaction within digital instrument clusters.

Samsung used its proprietary HIAA technology to bring this design to life. The openings in the Ferrari Luce’s display measure around 100mm, compared to less than 5mm for the smartphone front-facing camera holes. Moreover, the company used Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) technology to protect the OLED materials from moisture and air around the cut edge.

Meanwhile, a 10.1-inch screen is placed on the central control panel to show various modes, including a clock, stopwatch, and compass. There are also three mechanical hands mounted through small openings in the panel that rotate 360 degrees in real time. In addition, a 6.3-inch display lets rear passengers access driving information and adjust climate settings.

“The Ferrari Luce is a milestone car that demonstrates OLED’s technological advantages in enabling virtually any design while bringing together Samsung Display’s longstanding expertise,” said Joohyung Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Display Business at Samsung Display.
