Samsung has officially unveiled its long-rumored XR headset. Codenamed Project Moohan — Moohan means “infinity” in Korean — the device doesn’t yet have a name but is widely expected to be called the Galaxy XR. It runs on Android XR, a new platform developed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. The headset will be available sometime next year.
Samsung unveils its first-gen XR headset with Android XR
In February 2023, Samsung announced a joint project with Qualcomm and Google to create new extended reality (XR) experiences. Now, nearly two years and numerous leaks later, the company has introduced its first-gen XR headset, powered by Android XR. Samsung says the codename “Moohan” reflects its vision of delivering limitless, immersive experiences within “infinite” virtual spaces.
While the Korean firm hasn’t revealed much about the device, it gave us the first look at its highly anticipated XR headset. The product looks sleek and not as sophisticated as Apple’s Vision Pro. The latter is an expensive headset costing a whopping $3,499. Samsung’s headset is expected to be a lot cheaper, while still offering groundbreaking XR experiences.
The company says the device is lightweight and features “ergonomically optimized hardware” designed to ensure maximum comfort. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip is at the heart of the Galaxy XR. Android XR‘s software suite unlocks new capabilities that allow you to seamlessly switch between a fully immersive virtual environment and the real world.
You can enjoy YouTube and Google TV on a virtual big screen or relive treasured moments in 3D using Google Photos. Google Maps takes exploration to new heights, letting you soar above cities and landmarks. Google Chrome lets you view multiple virtual screens for seamless multitasking. Additionally, Circle to Search is just a gesture away. Android XR also supports existing Android apps.
“XR has quickly shifted from a distant promise to a tangible reality. We believe it has the potential to unlock new and meaningful ways to interact with the world by truly resonating with your everyday lives, transcending physical boundaries,” said Won-Joon Choi, a Samsung EVP. “We are excited to collaborate with Google to reshape the future of XR, taking our first step towards it with Project Moohan.”
The Galaxy XR will be available for purchase next year. Samsung may showcase it at CES 2025 in early January. The company has already announced an “AI for all” conference for the event, which kicks off on January 7.
