Gemini AI Powers Samsung’s Vision for Immersive XR Experiences

by | Dec 13, 2024 | Galaxy XR, News

A few hours ago, Samsung announced its first-gen XR headset powered by Android XR. The new platform co-developed by Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm delivers immersive extended reality experiences with headsets, smart glasses, and other similar products. It integrates advanced AI capabilities and works with phones, enhancing the user experience across various devices.

Samsung’s XR headset is a game changer

The collaboration between Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm may mark a significant shift in the mixed reality landscape, creating competitive pressure against existing players like Apple and Meta. CNET recently shared hands-on experience with the Android XR-powered Samsung headset. It allegedly offers hand and eye tracking, real-time translations, and other immersive experiences, all in a user-friendly Android-like interface.

Gemini AI appears to play a crucial role in the Android XR ecosystem, acting as a digital assistant and enhancing interaction with various apps and devices. Its ability to recognize user actions and memories adds a new layer of engagement. Gemini’s integration with apps like YouTube and Maps allows users to explore their surroundings and gain information dynamically. This feature enhances the overall user experience.

Additionally, Android XR can convert 2D photos and videos into 3D experiences. The integration of AI technology into augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) is revolutionizing user interactions. It has the potential to change how applications are developed and experienced. This advancement may lead to more intuitive and immersive environments for users, like live translations allowing users to engage in different languages seamlessly.

Samsung may have smart glasses in the pipeline

Interestingly, there have been rumors about Samsung first launching a pair of smart glasses. However, the company sprung a surprise by officially announcing a headset with Android XR at its core. It’s only getting started, though. The Korean firm plans to expand to other product categories in the future. It says that Project Moohan — the codename for its XR headset — is its first step towards the goal to reshape the future of XR.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Samsung to build a new ecosystem with Android XR, transforming computing for everyone on next-generation devices like headsets, glasses, and beyond,” said Sameer Samat, President of Android Ecosystem, Google. Both firms may share more about their XR plans in the coming months. Maybe at CES 2025, which begins on January 7. We will keep you posted.
