Samsung is contributing to 6G standardization efforts through the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). The company has now announced its participation in the Verizon 6G Innovation Forum, a global consortium for the next generation of wireless communications. The goal is to build a complete ecosystem and accelerate the development of related technologies.

Verizon 6G Innovation Forum aims to shape the next era of wireless technology

Led by US carrier Verizon, the consortium includes several companies in the IT and communications technology fields, including Samsung, Meta, Ericsson, Nokia, and Qualcomm. Together, these companies aim to build and commercialize the 6G, including designing new use cases, devices, and network technologies. To support this, Verizon will set up dedicated 6G Labs, starting in Los Angeles, where partners can test and refine technologies in a real-world environment.

The group will work on discovering new spectrum bands, testing bandwidth, and strengthening cooperation with global standards organizations like 3GPP. Furthermore, it will develop prototypes and conduct field tests at a 6G research institute. Speaking of Samsung’s role, the company plans to conduct research on new user experiences and advance communication technologies by applying AI-powered wireless communication.

“Samsung Electronics will work closely with global big tech companies to verify AI and communication network technologies that will lead the future of wireless, and bring forward the 6G era that provides innovative user experiences,” said Vice President Jin-Gook Jeong, head of the Next Generation Communications Research Center at Samsung Research.

Samsung already has a solid partnership with Verizon. In 2020, the two companies introduced virtualized base stations, which provide stable network services. Now, they are collaborating on the development of AI-based next-generation base stations while preparing for the shift to 6G.

Meanwhile, Samsung has been researching 6G technology in its Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC). It also published the 6G White Paper and the 6G Spectrum White Paper to share new possibilities for next-generation wireless communications.
