In July 2020, Samsung released a white paper outlining its vision for 6G. A world leader in mobile network technology, the company has now started looking ahead to the next-gen wireless communication standards, aiming to integrate AI for better quality and sustainability. It recently released another white paper highlighting how AI can help improve performance, reduce costs, and expand service coverage.

Samsung reveals its vision for AI-powered 6G wireless mobile networks

Samsung aims to integrate cutting-edge AI technology throughout the telecommunication ecosystem to enhance network quality and provide a sustainable, future-oriented user experience. Its latest white paper, titled “AI-Native & Sustainable Communication,” details the key areas driving 6G standardization, including market and technology trends, emerging services, and other critical attributes.

A senior Samsung Research executive stated that the company is accelerating 6G standardization efforts, focusing on AI-driven communication technologies. The Korean firm says the key drivers for 6G development include managing increased data traffic, reducing operational costs, enhancing energy efficiency, and expanding service coverage.

Samsung’s white paper also highlights several services that will define the 6G era. The company touts immersive extended reality (XR), digital twin technology, large-scale communication, universal connectivity, and fixed wireless access (FWA) enabling high-speed broadband services as the key services for the next-gen mobile networks. Samsung expects 6G standards to be ready around 2030.

With growing data demands from AI and streaming services, next-generation networks must be smarter, more efficient, and more reliable. This is where Samsung intends to use AI, helping streamline the development of sustainable connectivity for the next decade. Last year, it hosted the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit, showcasing AI-driven radio access network (AI-RAN) technologies.

“We are intensifying our 6G research efforts, focusing on AI-enabled communication technologies and sustainable networks,” said Charlie Zhang, Senior VP at Samsung Research. “As the telecommunication industry accelerates 6G standardization this year, Samsung will develop technologies to align with market demands.”
