Galaxy S25 Edge: Design and Hardware
The Galaxy S25 Edge is an incredibly slim smartphone. In fact, leakers and industry insiders called it the Galaxy S25 Slim until Samsung officially announced the S25 Edge at Unpacked on January 22. The company didn’t reveal much, but if the Slim and Edge are the same phone, we might be looking at a thickness of just 6.4mm, excluding the camera bump. For reference, the Galaxy S25 is 7.2mm thick, so the Edge is almost 1mm slimmer.
A prototype Samsung showcased at Unpacked revealed a dual camera setup on the back (more about the camera specs later). The cameras are arranged vertically in a raised pill-shaped housing in the top left corner. An LED flash unit sits below the cameras, which protrude further out of the housing. This design deviates from Samsung’s newly created flagship identity, but we understand the company has no choice because of the Galaxy S25 Edge’s slim profile.
The phone appears to have a metallic frame with power and volume buttons on the right side — standard Samsung stuff. We should get an aluminum body with Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on the front and back alongside IP68 dust and water resistance. The front design is also identical to other Galaxy flagships. You get a flat display with a punch-hole selfie camera design and slim bezels. The overall dimension and weight are still a mystery. However, the Galaxy S25 Edge is rumored to sport a big screen, so it won’t be much compact.
Leaked renders showed something else: Are there two models?
Interestingly, the first set of leaked Galaxy S25 Edge renders, which surfaced just a week before Unpacked, showed us something else. We are talking about the rear design here. More precisely, the camera setup. Those renders showed three cameras on the back without any housing. The lenses protrude directly out of the back panel, similar to the rest of the Galaxy S25 lineup and other recent Galaxy flagships.
Not just the design, those renders also hint at a triple camera setup for the Galaxy S25 Edge. However, the prototype Samsung brought to Unpacked has only two cameras. We’d certainly want to believe Samsung here for obvious reasons. The upcoming slim flagship is likely to feature only two cameras, which also makes sense considering its slimness. Fewer cameras mean more space for a sizable battery.
All this said, could there be two separate models? Some might believe so considering that the renders were supposed to show the Galaxy S25 Slim, not the Galaxy S25 Edge. However, we believe they are the same phone, and the renders were inaccurate. While Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks), the creator of those renders, has a solid track record of Samsung leaks — he has given us the first look at many Galaxy devices in the past, including the Galaxy S25 series — he isn’t immune to mistakes.
The leaker himself admitted that his Galaxy S25 Slim/Edge renders turned out to be inaccurate and that he’s investigating it. Hopefully, Steve will soon share updated renders showing the phone up close. With Samsung unveiling a prototype early, the design isn’t really a mystery, but we wouldn’t mind a few early renders before the company shows the real thing.
Galaxy S25 Edge: Display
Like the rest of the lineup, the Galaxy S25 Edge sports a flat display — Samsung stopped taking curved flagships in 2024. We expect the slim model to feature the same Dynamic AMOLED panel as the other models. Reports suggest the device will be as big as the Galaxy S25+, so it could offer a 6.7-inch screen, possibly with an FHD+ (1080p) resolution rather than QHD+. Samsung offers a QHD+ display on the Galaxy S25+ and S25 Ultra, but an FHD+ panel on the base model.
If Samsung is generous enough, the Galaxy S25 Edge might offer up to 120Hz variable screen refresh rate. The screen brightness may go up to 2,600 nits, though we do not have accurate information. The phone is likely to lack Samsung’s ProScaler display technology found on the S25+ and S25 Ultra — it requires QHD+ screen resolution. It will also probably miss out on the revolutionary anti-reflective coating on the display. Samsung offers it on the Ultra only.
Do not expect S Pen support
The Galaxy S25 Edge won’t support Samsung’s S Pen. This is another Ultra-exclusive technology. Samsung downgraded the S Pen this year, removing Bluetooth connectivity to allow for a more compact and lighter design for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, many fans aren’t happy about it, as this removal kills Air Actions like a remote camera shutter. We have launched a petition demanding Samsung to bring it back on the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
Galaxy S25 Edge: Camera
As mentioned above, the Galaxy S25 Edge (Slim) was originally rumored to feature three cameras on the back. A reliable industry insider said Samsung will offer an “Ultra” grade camera setup on the slim model. Subsequent rumors mentioned a 200MP primary shooter, a 50MP 3.5x zoom camera, and a 50MP ultrawide lens. We even had sensor details for these cameras.
The 200MP main camera was said to employ Samsung’s ISOCELL HP5 sensor with an optical format of 1/1.56 inches, smaller than the S25 Ultra’s 1/1.3-inch unit. The other two cameras allegedly use the ISOCELL JN5, a 1/2.76-inch sensor announced in June 2024. It boasts 2x in-sensor zoom.
Needless to say, this is a dream camera setup for Galaxy fans. We are talking about an industry-leading 200MP main camera, an upgraded 50MP ultrawide lens debuted on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and a completely new 3.5x zoom camera that could be better than the Galaxy S25 and S25+. Unfortunately, this setup may never materialize.
Samsung has already confirmed that the Galaxy S25 Edge will feature only two cameras on the back. And if recent rumors turn out to be accurate, it may lack a zoom camera altogether. That’s already a massive letdown, but things get worse. The ultrawide lens might also miss out on the upgraded 50MP sensor, with Samsung reportedly keeping the same 12MP unit found on the Galaxy S25 and S25+. The company may use its ALoP (All Lenses on Prism) telephoto camera technology to make the phone slimmer.
A 200MP primary camera may not be enough to call it a flagship
While the Galaxy S25 Edge might feature a 200MP primary camera, that is never enough to call it a flagship. Even the Fan Edition (FE) lineup, which sells a lot cheaper, boasts a zoom camera. Samsung should have axed the ultrawide lens on its upcoming slim phone. There may not be many people wanting to buy a phone only for a slim profile. Quality cameras and it would have been a much more versatile package.
Anyway, Samsung must have studied the market carefully and made this decision — maybe it is banking on a high-resolution main camera to produce quality zoom photos up to around 5x magnification with the help of AI and advanced software processing. Perhaps it doesn’t plan to sell many Galaxy S25 Edge phones. It may be available in limited quantity, potentially in select markets (more on this later).
Galaxy S25 Edge: Processor and Specs
The Galaxy S25 Edge is likely to be powered by the same Qualcomm processor as the rest of the lineup. We are talking about the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. More precisely, an overclocked version with a peak speed of 4.47GHz (the standard version runs up to 4.32GHz). This octa-core processor has two big CPU cores running at the maximum speed, with the other six operating at a speed of 3,53GHz.
With an all-big-core design, overheating is a major concern, especially for the Edge. Its slim form factor leaves little room for an effective cooling solution, making thermal management even more challenging. The small battery adds another layer of worry, as the Snapdragon 8 Elite is known for its high power consumption at peak performance. Hopefully, Samsung has addressed these issues with an optimized design.
Nonetheless, with the Snapdragon 8 Elite at its heart, the Galaxy S25 Edge will offer a top-tier flagship performance. Qualcomm built this chipset for the AI era, with a heavy focus on camera performance. A chipset alone can’t do much when the camera hardware is underwhelming, but Samsung might be able to squeeze something out of the Edge’s modest camera setup.
12GB RAM and Wi-Fi 7 may be part of the package
Samsung is expected to offer 12GB LPDDR5X RAM on the Galaxy S25 Edge. An early benchmark listing has already confirmed this alongside an overclocked Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. The phone may also be available in an 8GB RAM variant. Storage options may include 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, with the latter two offering UFS 4.0 and the former offering UFS 3.1. The Galaxy S25 Edge won’t support microSD cards for expandable storage.
This phone should support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth v5.4 connectivity alongside NFC, GPS, and USB Type-C 3.2. It may miss out on Ultra Wideband (UWB) though. You can also expect AKG-tuned stereo speakers, Samsung DeX, and Samsung Wireless DeX. While we are hopeful of an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, we won’t be surprised if Samsung uses an optical scanner. The company could even switch to a side-mounted capacitive scanner if it saves some space.
Galaxy S25 Edge: Software and Features
The Galaxy S25 Edge will run Androud 15-based One UI 7 out of the box. The new version debuted on the Galaxy S25 series and will gradually roll out to eligible older models. It brings a major UI overhaul and functional enhancements, including new AI features. It’s unclear if the Edge will support the same set of AI features as the rest of the Galaxy S25 lineup, but we won’t be surprised if it misses out on a few. Samsung may not offer some resource-heavy tools due to overheating and power concerns.
Additionally, One UI 7 introduces smoother and more fluid system animations, enhancing the overall user experience. This new version is also more customizable and integrates Google’s Gemini AI into various apps for smarter and more intuitive mobile experiences. It is being widely regarded as the biggest update in Samsung’s history, and we agree. The company has already started software development for the Galaxy S25 Edge. The phone should be eligible for seven years of OS and security updates.
Galaxy S25 Edge: Battery and Charging
Samsung’s first slim “flagship” will expectedly pack a small battery. Recent recertifications suggest it will feature a 3,900mAh battery. With the enhanced power efficiency of the 3nm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, the phone might deliver a decent battery life, though it might struggle to pull through the day if you are a power user. We won’t complain though, as Samsung has limited room for a big battery here.
However, we would be disappointed if the Galaxy S25 Edge misses out on 45W wired charging. We know that it is still slow for a 2025 flagship. But Samsung hasn’t moved beyond 45W charging for years, with the Galaxy S25 Ultra sticking to it. However, the word is that the Edge model will top out at 25W charging, the same as the Galaxy S25. If true, Samsung deserves heavy criticism. It’s about time the company abandoned 25W charging on flagships.
Coming to the wireless charging speed, we expect nothing faster than 15W. It’s unclear whether Samsung will offer Qi2 support here. If it does, it will be via a case. You might get slightly faster wireless charging speeds and support for magnetic accessories like a wallet when you put on a compatible Qi2 case.
Galaxy S25 Edge: Price, Colors, and Release Date
The Galaxy S25 Edge was originally rumored to cost over $1,000. This was based on the fact that the device offers a “dream” triple camera setup and a flagship-grade display. Its model number SM-S937 puts it between the Galaxy S25+ (SM-S936) and S25 Ultra (SM-S938), so that was probably another consideration for this pricing structure.
However, recent developments suggest Samsung will price it much lower. Expect more details, including color options and availability, to be available closer to the launch, which is expected in the second half of April or early May. Some rumors suggest Samsung has finalized 39 markets for the Galaxy S25 Edge’s launch. The list doesn’t include the US, China, and Korea. However, we have seen the phone’s US version (SM-S937U) in online listings on a few occasions, so none of this is set in stone yet.
