While Apple is gearing up to shake up the foldable smartphone market with its first iPhone Fold, Samsung’s memory division is also set to benefit. The Korean company has received a purchase order (PO) for DRAM chips for the iPhone Fold. This shows the firm’s solid role as a key component supplier to Apple.

Samsung’s 12GB LPDDR5X DRAM could power the iPhone Fold

According to The Bell, Apple has placed an order with Samsung for 12GB LPDDR5X DRAM. The Cupertino giant will use these chips in its foldable smartphone, expected to launch in the second half of the year. Samsung plans to begin supplying the DRAM in Q2 2026.

The report further says that the contract includes a substantial price increase compared to previous years. DRAM prices have climbed greatly since the second half of last year due to growing demand for cutting-edge memory chips. However, Apple appears to have inked the deal at relatively favorable prices thanks to its large purchasing volumes.

Apart from Samsung, other memory makers such as SK Hynix and Micron may also supply DRAM for the foldable iPhone. Apple usually works with multiple vendors to maintain a stable supply chain and reduce risks related to component shortages. However, Samsung is likely to remain the primary supplier thanks to its ample DRAM production capacity.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display is reportedly gearing up to supply foldable panels for the iPhone Fold. The company has already created a dedicated production line device at its facility in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. It could begin production of panels in June 2026. These are expected to be near-crease-free foldable OLED displays.

Industry watchers say the first foldable iPhone will have limited shipments in its initial year. Apple could make around 10 million units in 2026. The device may adopt an infolding mechanism with a wider form factor. The inner display may measure 7.58 inches, while the outer screen could measure 5.35 inches.
