Samsung’s redesigned S Pen for foldables has reportedly cleared internal tests, setting the stage for its use in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Unlike previous models, it doesn’t require a digitizer, allowing for thinner and lighter foldables. The exact technology behind this digitizer-free S Pen remains unknown.
Samsung readies a new digitizer-free S Pen for foldables
Rumors about Samsung developing a new S Pen for foldables have been circulating for months. The plan was to remove the digitizer, a thin layer in the display assembly used to detect S Pen movement and read input. This would help the company cut some weight and thickness from foldables. It appears the work is now complete.
According to X user @PandaFlashPro, who has shared several details about the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 in recent weeks, Samsung’s new S Pen has passed internal testing. The company is now ready to use it in its upcoming foldables. Note that only the Fold series supports the S Pen, while the Flip series does not.
In fact, Samsung’s limited edition Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition (SE) launched in October last year lacks S Pen support. This is because the new model wasn’t ready back then, and a sleek design was a priority for this foldable. With the new S Pen not requiring a digitizer, expect the second-gen Fold SE to support the stylus. Samsung’s upcoming trifold (aka multi-fold) should also support the S Pen.
The Korean firm is expected to launch the tri-fold alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 in July or August. It may also unveil an entry-level Galaxy Z Flip FE at the same event. There’s no word yet on a new Fold SE though. The first-gen slim foldable is only sold in China and South Korea. More details should emerge in the coming weeks.
