In short, there’s a clear line between our personal and professional lives. But Google seemed to miss the memo when it rolled out a pretty unwelcome update that swapped out your contacts’ names and photos with info pulled from their Google accounts.
Yeah, it’s not ideal. But good news — it’s being rolled back, according to 9to5Google. The publication also mentions that the update bringing custom contact photos to Google Messages is now rolling out widely in both the beta and stable versions (20241120). So if you’ve been waiting for that fix, it’s finally here.
How to customize the profile photo for someone in Google Messages
You can choose to show your contact’s profile picture in Google Messages. But if that feels too formal or you just want to add a more personal touch to how they appear, here’s what you need to do.
- Open Google Messages on your Galaxy phone (Make sure it’s updated to the latest version)
- Open your friend’s chat
- Tap on the contact’s name or their profile picture at the top of the conversation
- On the details page, tap the profile picture again
- To switch between the shared profile photo and your own contact image, swipe left or right
