Gemini, Google’s LLM model, is well-integrated within Android. Now, Google has introduced a new Gemini feature called “Ask about place,” aiming to improve user interaction with Google Maps. This feature has reportedly started rolling out to users. Since Samsung Galaxy S25 users already have access to advanced Gemini integration, they could be able to enjoy this new feature soon.

A new “Ask about place” feature is coming to Gemini

Folks over at Android Authority provide us with an early look at Gemini’s new “Ask about place” feature. This feature is specifically designed for queries about places and locations. Users can ask questions directly about specific locations within the Google Maps app via Gemini. The “Ask about place” appears when you call up the Gemini Assistant from Google Maps. You don’t need to use any external apps. There’s already a similar feature called “Ask about screen,” which works within other apps.

However, the implementation of the new feature is not yet perfect. Its functionality is still inconsistent, giving varying results across different accounts and types of places. When the feature works properly, Gemini gives very good answers. It can give you the best route to the destination from all the available routes. It does this by using the Maps URL included in the query. Google has tried to integrate this feature well with the practicality of users in mind.

As things stand, this tool works best with select Google Maps entries, like popular places and common places of interest. For broader queries like cities and states, it does not do a very good job. Occasionally, Gemini also refuses to process Maps URLs, which hinders the experience. You might need a more premium model, like Gemini Advanced, to make it more consistent. Hopefully, Google will address these issues soon for a more reliable experience.
