Leak Suggests Galaxy Z Fold 8 gets Smaller Cover Screen Camera Hole

Samsung’s next foldable could see a subtle but meaningful design shift on the front. A new leak from a reliable tipster hints at a smaller cutout for the external selfie camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 8. It isn’t immediately clear how Samsung achieved this — it could mean new technology or changes in the camera hardware itself.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 could get a smaller selfie camera
According to Ice Universe, the front camera cutout on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 measures 2.5mm. That’s a 33% smaller hole than the Fold 7 (3.7mm), making the cover screen feel more immersive. The mockups below clearly visualize the size difference (Fold 7 on the left, Fold 8 on the right).
However, such a sizable reduction in a component that directly impacts the camera quality raises some concerns. The tipster says Samsung may have adopted new technology to reduce the cutout size for the selfie camera. The way they worded it suggests the camera hardware remains unchanged.
However, we recently saw Samsung increase the cutout on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, reportedly for a wider field of view. The bezels around the lens opening on the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra still have the same width. This suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 8 either eliminates the bezels or Samsung has made some changes to the camera hardware.
If it’s the latter, the upcoming Fold could get a smaller selfie shooter on the cover screen, a narrower aperture, or at the very least, reduced field of view. The Fold 7 employs a 10MP unit with an optical size of 1/3.0 inches and an f/2.2 aperture. Any further reductions in sensor size or aperture could severely impact the camera’s low-light performance.
Perhaps this is a trade-off Samsung might be ready to make. The front camera isn’t always the primary shooter on foldables, especially the one on the cover screen. You can always unfold the device and use the rear cameras for selfies. More details about the Galaxy Z Fold 8 should emerge in the coming weeks as Samsung prepares to launch it in July.
