What’s come today was pretty much expected, given the recent memory price hikes, which some might call RAMflation. Prices are going up across the board, and there’s no sign of them stopping so far. It isn’t limited to one region. Samsung has been making its phones more expensive in other regions too, such as Korea and India.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 sees a price hike in the US, and you can thank AI data centers for it

Today, Samsung quietly began the process in the US, and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (review) is the first to see a price hike. First spotted by our friends over at 9to5Google, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 1TB variant is now $2,499, making it $80 more expensive. Likewise, the $80 price hike also applies to the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 512 GB. Which would otherwise cost $2,119, but a discount brings it down to $2,079.

It’s unclear why Samsung made the change and did so quietly. One plausible explanation is that it could be part of a broader strategy. In which, successors like the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Wide Fold, or Galaxy Z Flip 8 might also see price increases, so the eventual jump doesn’t feel too drastic. There are plenty of theories about why this change happened, is happening, and may continue to happen.

At the end of the day, consumers (all of us) will have to bear the cost and pay for rising memory prices. You might already be tired of hearing about memory chips, AI data centers, and HBM. But these are driving much of what we consume. And predictions from research firms suggest that demand for memory chips is only going to grow. So it’s worth bracing for what’s ahead.
