Galaxy S27’s Snapdragon Chip Tipped to Support UFS 5.0

This year, Qualcomm is gearing up to launch two mobile flagship chipsets, tentatively called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. While leaks have already revealed most of the key specifications, a fresh report now suggests support for UFS 5.0 storage. This could pave the way for smartphone makers like Samsung to adopt the new storage standard in upcoming flagship devices.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips may support the next-gen storage standard

Both the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could use TSMC’s 2nm process. The chips may feature a 2+3+3 CPU configuration based on custom Oryon cores. The former will likely use an Adreno 845 GPU, while the latter could boast the powerful Adreno 850 GPU. In a recent Weibo post, tipster Digital Chat Station reiterated details of the chips, though they now mention support for UFS 5.0.

Why is this significant? UFS 5.0 is the latest storage standard announced by JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council). Support for this technology on a chip means smartphone makers can now choose to embrace it in upcoming devices. Simply put, it lays the groundwork for next-gen storage technology upgrades.

Reports suggest that some Galaxy S27 models could ship with UFS 5.0 storage. The Galaxy S27 lineup will reportedly include the Galaxy S27, S27+, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra. Based on speculation, the former two might use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, while the latter two might feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Of course, some models (depending on region) may also feature Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2700 chip, which could support UFS 5.0.

So, regardless of the chip Samsung uses for the Galaxy S27 series, the models are capable of supporting UFS 5.0. The newly launched Galaxy S26 series remains stuck with UFS 4.0 storage, despite strong rumors of a UFS 4.1 upgrade. If the 2027 flagships do adopt UFS 5.0, it will be a big leap in storage technology.
