MediaTek has refreshed its upper mid-range silicon lineup with the Dimensity 8550. It builds on the Dimensity 8500 chipset, which was uneviled earlier this year. The latest chip doesn’t reinvent performance and instead aligns with Google’s next wave of of on-device AI features.
MediaTek introduces Dimensity 8550 with AI improvements
The main upgrade is support for Gemini Nano V3, enabling what Google calls Gemini Intelligence. This brings advanced generative AI features directly onto smartphones, reducing reliance on cloud processing and pushing more workloads to the device itself.
At the core of the Dimensity 8550 is the same NPU 880, now paired with an LLM Booster. This combination may help handle large language model tasks efficiently, giving mid-range phones a shot at flagship-level AI experiences.
Outside of AI, the chip remains unchanged. It retains the all-big-core CPU setup with eight Cortex-A725 cores arranged in a 1+3+4 configuration. The prime core clocks up to 3.4GHz, with supporting clusters tuned for balanced performance and efficiency.
Graphics duties are handled by the Mali-G720 MC8 GPU, supporting high refresh rate displays up to 144Hz at 1440p resolution. Media capabilities include 4K video recording at 60fps and AV1 decoding support.
Connectivity features remain modern, including dual active 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, LPDDR5X memory, and UFS 4 storage compatibility. And as you know, the hardware alone won’t suffice Gemini Intelligence requirements, for which you also need consistent Android updates and at least 12GB of RAM.
