It looks like Samsung is gearing up for a storage upgrade for its next-gen Galaxy S phones. A fresh leak suggests the Galaxy S27 series could feature UFS 5.0 storage, though only select models will get it. If this turns out to be true, it could greatly improve the flagship experience, particularly in terms of speed.

Samsung may finally upgrade storage technology with next-gen flagships

According to tipster Yeux1122, Samsung could include UFS 5.0 storage in its upcoming Galaxy S27 lineup. However, only select models may feature this advanced storage technology. The tipster also noted that due to increased costs and current market circumstances, the company’s original plan has changed. This suggests that the firm may have initially intended to offer UFS 5.0 to more or all models in the lineup.

While the tipster did not specify which models will get the upgrade, it should at least be the Galaxy S27 Ultra. This would align with Samsung’s typical strategy of reserving the best hardware for its most advanced flagship. An earlier report also suggests that the company may introduce four models in the Galaxy S27 series. The Galaxy S27 Pro is said to join the usual trio: Galaxy S27, S27+, and S27 Ultra. As such, the Pro model could also be a candidate for UFS 5.0.

Samsung has been sticking to UFS 4.0 since the Galaxy S23 series. Even the latest Galaxy S26 series skipped the upgrade, despite expectations that it might adopt newer UFS 4.1. Meanwhile, other OEMs, such as OnePlus and Xiaomi, already use UFS 4.1 in their latest flagship smartphones. The Korean firm now finally appears to be planning an upgrade in this area with the Galaxy S27 series.

Last year, the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) announced the UFS 5.0 standard. This opens the door for smartphone makers to utilize the latest storage technology. The standard offer increased sequential performance to up to 10.8 GB/s, supporting powerful AI applications.
