Someone Is Running GTA, God of War, NFS and More on Galaxy Watch 5

A few years ago, if someone managed to browse the internet on their Galaxy Watch, it would turn heads. “Oh, how cool!” people would say. But that’s no longer the case. Smartwatches these days offer a lot more, from health-focused features to AI-powered assistants that make life easier. But are these all that a smartwatch can do? Well, not exactly. In fact, someone on Reddit is running GTA: Vice City, God of War, NFS: Most Wanted, and other fan-favorite titles right on their Galaxy Watch 5.

Reddit user u/ZenonDesingk (h/t TechRadar) recently shared an impressive experiment where they managed to run several games on their Galaxy Watch 5. Despite the device being powered by the mid-range Exynos W920 chip, Zenon found a way to get a PSP emulator working on the smartwatch. Initially, their attempts to sideload a PSP emulator were unsuccessful. However, the breakthrough came when they used Bugjaeger, an Android Debug Bridge (ADB) tool that helps debug Android devices. By installing Bugjaeger on their phone, enabling wireless ADB on the watch, and connecting both devices to the same Wi-Fi network, Zenon was able to install the emulator directly onto the Galaxy Watch 5.

After getting the PSP emulator up and running, Zenon was surprised that many games played smoothly at 60 FPS. However, more demanding titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus saw a dip in performance, occasionally dropping to 30 FPS. Given the watch’s small screen, on-screen controls weren’t ideal. So Zenon used a Bluetooth controller (specifically the 8Bitdo Ultimate 2C) for a more enjoyable gaming experience.

Although Zenon was impressed with this feat, they realized the watch wasn’t designed for this kind of heavy lifting. They eventually reset the device and returned to using it as a regular smartwatch. This experiment just goes to show that, even with its limitations, the Galaxy Watch 5 is capable of a lot more than just fitness tracking and notifications.
