Samsung has officially confirmed that the GIF animation capture feature will return to Smart Select. This feature was removed from Galaxy devices with the One UI 6.1.1 update. While it was initially expected to come back with One UI 7.0, users won’t have to wait that long. Samsung has announced that the feature will be reinstated as early as October, courtesy of an app update.
GIF animation capture is coming back to Smart Select soon
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 debuted Samsung’s One UI 6.1.1 in July. The new version introduced several AI features and other improvements. However, it also removed a handy feature that many Galaxy users loved—the ability to capture GIF animations via Smart Select. Unsurprisingly, its removal irked many, leading to complaints on social media and Samsung community forums.
Recently, a reliable source revealed that the GIF capture feature would return to Smart Select. However, they didn’t specify an exact date for its return. Initially, it was assumed the feature would come back with One UI 7.0 or 7.1. Now, it has been confirmed that GIF capture will be reintroduced much earlier. Samsung plans to make it available through an app update in early October.
According to a Samsung moderator, the company tried to improve Smart Select in One UI 6.1.1 by integrating AI functionality. However, it couldn’t implement the desired changes without removing GIF capture. Thankfully, the removal was not permanent. Samsung is actively working on restoring the feature to Smart Select soon. We will let you know when it arrives, or when Samsung confirms its rollout.
The One UI 6.1.1 update also removed the oval selector from the Smart Select edge panel. In fact, the new One UI version lacks a dedicated edge panel. While it is still accessible from the main edge panel for apps, some users aren’t happy with the lack of an oval selector. It remains to be seen if the upcoming update will bring it. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
