Samsung has begun its August 2024 security update journey. Surprisingly, flagship models aren’t the first to the party. The company has released the latest security patch for a couple of less-known premium mid-range phones. The Galaxy M55 and Galaxy F55 are picking up the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release). Other eligible models should follow soon.
Galaxy M55 and F55 kick off Samsung’s August security update party
Samsung recently revealed that the August SMR for Galaxy devices, including tablets, patches 50 vulnerabilities. These include one critical Android OS issue, one critical Galaxy flaw, one high-severity Samsung Semiconductor issue, and dozens of other vulnerabilities across Android OS and Galaxy components. Some flaws allowed remote access to attackers via user interaction.
The Korean firm has now started pushing these patches to eligible Galaxy devices. The Galaxy M55 and Galaxy F55 are currently receiving the August security update in India. The new firmware build numbers for the devices are M556BXXU3AXG7 and E556BXXU3AXG7. If you didn’t already know, these two phones have a lot in common and often receive updates with similar build numbers.
The two premium mid-range phones appear to be picking up some additional goodies apart from the 50 vulnerability fixes. Unfortunately, Samsung’s official changelogs don’t reveal anything. Don’t expect major new features, though. The OTA (over the air) package for the Galaxy A55 weighs 461MB, while that for the Galaxy F55 weighs 455MB, which aren’t massive updates.
Samsung should soon expand the August SMR rollout to other devices, including the Galaxy S24 series and the new foldables. The company is also expected to push major feature updates to its phones and tablets this month. It will bring new AI tools and other enhancements. It remains to be seen if the security patch will arrive separately or bundled with the feature release. We will keep you posted. To check for updates, go to Settings > Software update > Download and install.
