Samsung has revealed the content of its September 2024 security patch for Galaxy phones and tablets. This month’s security update patches nearly 70 vulnerabilities across the Galaxy family. The company will soon roll out the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release) to eligible models.

Samsung patches nearly 70 Galaxy vulnerabilities with the September update

Every month, Samsung releases a new security update for Galaxy devices. Called SMRs, these updates patch dozens of vulnerabilities of varying severity. They combine Android OS fixes from Google and partner vendors with Galaxy/One UI fixes from Samsung. The Korean firm calls its internal patches Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items.

Samsung packaged 67 vulnerability patches in its September security update. 44 of those are Android OS patches, one of which is labeled a “critical” fix by Google. The remaining 23 are SVE items and do not affect Android products from other brands. Among those are two high-severity vulnerabilities in ThemeCenter, a system app on Galaxy devices.

According to Samsung, these vulnerabilities allowed local attackers to delete non-preloaded apps and install privileged apps on affected devices. The September SMR also patches a high-severity improper access control vulnerability in DualDarManagerProxy, a system app. It allowed local attackers to cause a local permanent denial of service.

Samsung may soon start rolling out the September security update to eligible Galaxy phones and tablets. All flagship models launched in 2021 and later will receive this update, while the company will also update dozens of budget and mid-range models. You should get a notification when the update reaches your device. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app.

Samsung is also preparing to roll out the One UI 6.1.1 feature update to eligible Galaxy devices (new One UI 6.1 update for non-folding phones). It brings Galaxy AI features and other enhancements introduced on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. It remains to be seen whether the September security patch comes bundled with the new feature update.
