Samsung would ideally prefer not to raise prices for the Galaxy S25, but certain factors are beyond its control. However, the company is making a concerted effort to limit the price hike by cutting costs where it can. One such area appears to be the display. Reports suggest that Samsung has scrapped the planned upgrade of the Galaxy S25 Ultra to M14 OLED materials. All three models are now expected to feature M13 OLED displays.

Galaxy S25 Ultra’s M14 OLED upgrade canceled to cut costs

Samsung’s display manufacturing division has already supplied M14 OLED panels to Google and Apple. These advanced OLED displays were also expected to feature in the Galaxy S25 series. Early leaks suggested the company planned to equip the S25 Ultra with M14 displays while keeping the other two models on the M13 displays. However, to reduce costs, Samsung has now reportedly canceled the Ultras display upgrade as well.

The confirmation comes from display industry veteran Ross Young, the same source that previously revealed Samsung’s M14 plans for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The tipster confirms the decision is purely for “cost reasons” as the company looks to save its profit margin. The increased price of the Snapdragon 8 Elite may force the Korean firm to charge more for its new flagships. It’s trying to minimize the hike by cutting costs elsewhere.

M14 OLED panels feature deuterium in all three host colors (Red, Green, and Blue), while M13 uses deuterium only in Green and Blue colors. This allows for brightness and efficiency gains of 20–30%, while the lifespan increases by 10–20%. That said, Samsung can still improve the Galaxy S25 screen brightness and efficiency without upgrading to the newer display technology. All three models are expected to bring display improvements.

According to leaker Ice Universe, the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s display boasts improved brightness, viewing angle, color accuracy, and other upgrades. “It looks much better to the naked eye,” the tipster said. They previously claimed that Samsung would address the screen graininess problem on the S25 series. The new flagships arrive in early 2025 with a host of other upgrades, including at least one new camera. Stay tuned for more information.
