Samsung has reportedly resumed its silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor business. This shows the company’s push into next-generation power chips as demand for AI infrastructure increases. The firm eyes to kick off mass production of SiC sometime in 2028.
Samsung sees SiC as a new growth engine in the foundry business
Samsung reportedly began preparing its SiC business in 2023 to secure new growth engines for the future. At that time, the company was looking to diversify its foundry businesses, as demand for 8-inch (Si) capacity started to weaken. While the lines make mature processes, they normally yield lower margins than 12-inch fabs. As a result, it planned to shift part of this capacity toward silicon carbide production.
However, Samsung had to slow down the business development as the semiconductor market weakened during that period. The company concentrated on recovering its memory chip business. That said, the firm continued research and development, though it put a commercialization plan on hold.
Now that market conditions for memory have improved greatly, Samsung appears to be restarting its full-scale SiC initiative. According to a report from ETNews, the Korean firm has restarted discussions with key partners about its SiC production plans. These discussions cover technology purchase and commercialization plans with materials, components, and equipment firms.
“The pursuit of the SiC foundry business, which had been suspended for some time, has been restarted in earnest,” said an industry official. “Initial work has begun to establish it as a new growth engine for Samsung Electronics.”
For the uninitiated, SiC is a combination of silicon and carbon. SiC-based chips can resist higher temperatures and voltages than conventional silicon chips. As a result, the industry sees SiC as a next-generation power semiconductor offering solid performance and stability.
Reports suggest Samsung may begin building its SiC supply chain this year. The company could set up a pilot line for prototype production next year, with mass production in 2028.
