At the ongoing Milan Design Week (MDW) 2026, Samsung is one of the exhibitors and it is showcasing quite fancy things. One such that Samsung revealed is something called Project Luna. It’s essentially a concept AI companion that feels very different from what we’re used to.

Samsung showcases Project Luna, a concept companion, at MDW 2026

At first glance, Project Luna looks simple. It’s a small device with a round display and a movable head. But the idea behind it is much bigger. Samsung describes Luna as a home AI companion, designed to step in when no other device is around and act as a central presence in your space. It even has a personality, using animations and sounds to feel more approachable. It has some Wall-E vibes.

But here’s where things get interesting. Instead of keeping AI locked to one device, like your phone, Samsung is pushing a concept called “communal AI”, which it revealed in conversation with Fast Company. With Project Luna, the AI can move between devices, start on Luna, then jump to your TV, smart speaker, or projector. All while keeping the same interface and “personality”. So instead of multiple assistants, you get one AI that follows you around your home.

If all of this sounds familiar, believe me, you’re not alone. Samsung already tried something like this before. Remember Ballie? The AI assistant that could move around your home? Yeah… that didn’t really go anywhere. But this time, Samsung is playing it safe. Project Luna is clearly labeled as a concept, not a product, which means: there’s no release date, no guarantees it will launch, and it’s just a vision for now.

It’s part of a bigger AI shift

This also lines up with Samsung’s broader AI direction. Instead of focusing only on phones, Samsung is expanding AI across devices, building a connected ecosystem, and trying to make AI feel less intrusive and more “natural”. Project Luna is basically the physical version of that idea.

Right now, AI mostly lives inside apps and screens. Project Luna shows a future where AI exists in your environment, moves between devices, and feels more like a presence than a tool. Whether it actually launches or not, that’s a different story.
