Samsung has been making foldables for quite a while now, and it will soon launch its eighth-generation foldables in the coming weeks. Even so, it hasn’t stopped exploring new form factors. One of them is phones with rollable displays, as revealed in a recently published Samsung patent.

Samsung experiments with rollable form factor in latest patent

Rollable phones (or phones with rollable displays, whichever sounds better) aren’t a new idea. There have been rumors in the past that Samsung is working on one, but nothing has materialized so far. That said, they’ve been worth checking out at trade shows like CES and MWC as well.

This particular patent in question (via Android Authority) sketches out a fairly intriguing direction for smartphone design. It begins with a concept that feels familiar, a handset that looks standard at first glance but can expand its display. Pulling the screen outward would widen it, turning it into something closer to a tablet-like experience.

The second idea is where things get more experimental. The design suggests a device made of two enclosing parts that completely hide the display when shut. That could help protect the screen from scratches or cracks, which is a real concern today. When you pull the ends apart, the display slides out smoothly. It sounds futuristic, though it’s still theoretical.

Samsung also describes sensors that track how far and how fast the screen extends. That data would help the interface adapt in real time, so apps don’t glitch or stretch awkwardly. Still, it’s just a patent for now, and there’s no telling whether Samsung rollable phones are coming soon, or at all. Even so, you can’t ignore the appeal of a phone that transforms only when you want it to.

Quick question, what would you like Samsung to call these rollable phones if they ever make it to market?
