Samsung Could Manufacture Anthropic’s First Custom AI Chip

Anthropic is taking its first steps toward building its own AI chip, and Samsung could end up playing a key role. A new report says the AI company has been in talks with Samsung about manufacturing the chip using its 2nm process and advanced packaging technology. It’s still early, but the discussions are already turning heads.
Samsung’s 2nm process could power Anthropic’s AI chip ambitions
According to The Information, the project is still in its early stages, and Anthropic hasn’t finalized a chip design or started manufacturing. The report also says the company recently hired Clive Chan, an early member of OpenAI’s custom silicon team. This suggests it’s steadily building the expertise needed to develop its own chips.
The move follows a growing trend across the AI industry. OpenAI, Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are all developing custom chips to handle AI workloads more efficiently while reducing their reliance on outside suppliers.
For Samsung, landing Anthropic as a foundry customer would be a major win. The report says Anthropic is evaluating Samsung’s 2nm manufacturing process alongside its advanced packaging technology. If the discussions lead to a deal, Samsung could begin chipping away at TSMC’s lead in advanced AI chip manufacturing.
Samsung’s foundry ambitions could also get another boost. Google is reportedly considering Samsung to manufacture part of a future Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), which would be another important win for its contract chip business. Samsung and SK hynix also participated in Anthropic’s funding round earlier this year.
Anthropic says its custom chip plans won’t replace its existing hardware partners. The company expects AWS’ Trainium chips, Google’s TPUs, and Nvidia GPUs to remain central to its AI infrastructure. It’s also reportedly exploring chips from Microsoft and UK startup Fractile.
