Samsung Lowers Galaxy S21’s Update Frequency Just Before One UI 7 Release

by | Feb 4, 2025 | Galaxy S, News

Samsung is no longer offering monthly security updates to the Galaxy S21 series. Going forward, the 2021 flagships will receive these security patches quarterly. The devices are still eligible for one more Android OS update, the Android 15-based One UI 7 debuted with the Galaxy S25 series last month.

Galaxy S21 series dropped to quarterly security updates

Samsung launched the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra in January 2021. Debuted with Android 11, the devices have received updates to Android 12, Android 13, and Android 14 over the past four years. This is alongside monthly security patches and several other smaller feature releases.

The lineup turned four this January, and Samsung has now duly dropped it to quarterly security updates. That’s the standard update policy for Galaxy flagships launched before 2024: four years of monthly security patches, one year of quarterly patches, and four major Android OS updates.

Based on this, the Galaxy S21 trio should receive security patches at least until the end of January 2026. These updates will come about every three months. As far as the remaining Android OS update is concerned, we are talking about One UI 7, which may roll out later this month or sometime in March. That’s the last major feature update for Samsung’s 2021 flagships.

Note that none of this applies to the Galaxy S21 FE. The Fan Edition model arrived a whole year after the flagship trio, running Android 12 out of the box. It is still receiving monthly security patches and is eligible for two more major Android releases. It will receive One UI 7 in the coming months and then grab One UI 8 when the time comes.

As mentioned earlier, only flagship devices launched before 2024 fall under this policy. Since last year, Samsung has offered seven years of security patches and seven major Android OS updates to all Galaxy flagships. Mid-range models are eligible for six years of updates. You can always check for new updates on your Galaxy from the Settings app.
